Stay Safe this Season with ATV Tips!

Each year, the ATV industry attracts riders from across the nation — and region — to southwestern Virginia’s trails. Here in Tazewell County, the Original Pocahontas Trail, also known as the OP, boasts more than 90 miles of trails across 2,100 acres.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a first-time driver, you’ll enjoy navigating the mountainous terrain as you view some of the county’s most . But before you take off, follow these safety standards to ensure that you and other riders out on the trails are avoiding dangerous situations and unnecessary injuries.

This month, Brent Harrison, owner of Trailhead ATV Resort, joins us to share the top 10 things riders should know before hitting the trails in Southwest Virginia:

  1. Know the rules of the road. Be mindful of the route. Avoid unfamiliar terrain.
  2. Wear proper safety gear. DOT approved helmets should be worn at all times.
  3. Never ride alone.
  4. Adhere to speed limits.
  5. Be cognizant of other riders (and drivers).
  6. Use proper hand signals.
  7. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  8. Always wear your seatbelt when riding a side by side.
  9. Inspect your machine before hitting the trails. This includes air pressure, brakes, fluids, etc.
  10. Never carry a passenger on a single seat ATV.
