Let’s #ShopLocal this holiday season!

Over the last two years, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for small businesses across the United States. Now, more than ever, it’s critical that we turn our attention — and our wallets — toward the shops that sustain and give personality to our communities: the local ones.

According to U.S. Census Small Business Pulse Survey data collected between November 22-28, approximately 20.8% of Virginia small business owners reported that COVID-19 had a “large negative effect” on their revenues, compared to the national average of 22%.

Around 35.3% of Virginia business owners said they anticipated it would take six months or longer for their business to return to normal operations.

When you shop small, you aren’t just investing in artisan and regionally-sourced goods — you’re also investing in your local economy and community. For every dollar spent locally, approximately 67 cents stays in the community, according to the U.S Small Business Administration.

In fact, your investment directly creates more opportunities for small businesses to thrive and expand. Each year, “two out of every three net new jobs” are created by small businesses, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2021 Agency Financial Report states.

From trendy boutiques to coffee shops and restaurants, our business community is constantly evolving, tapping into niche interests and capitalizing on our outdoor tourism industry. Tazewell County business owners are always finding — and creating — opportunities to thrive, and that resilience speaks volumes.

There’s no better way to show your Tazewell County pride than to buy your gifts and goods right here in our hills! This holiday season and beyond, make an extra effort to support our neighbors. You’ll be glad you did (and so will they)!

Local’s tip: Unsure what to give this season? Try a certificate or gift card and let your loved one do the picking. This is also a great alternative for off-season pursuits!
