Each Christmas season, about a mile outside of downtown Bluefield, Lotito Park comes alive with its vast collection of festive displays at the Holiday of Lights. And trust us — it’s a Tazewell County tradition you don’t want to miss!
This annual event starts the week after Thanksgiving, and it’s one of southern Virginia’s hidden holiday gems that draws visitors from near and far. Routed along the paved perimeter of the park, the hilly terrain is decked out with lights along the road, up the mountainsides, and spread throughout the open fields below.
Just after 6 p.m. each evening, the park transforms into themed destinations. In Candyland, illuminated sweets line the pavement, and just beyond a section of seasonal skiers and snowmen, dinosaurs set the scene for a prehistoric period.
If you’re driving and feeling extra festive, tune into your favorite holiday music station before you get started. Or if the weather’s mild, roll down the windows and take in the detailed decor. If you’d rather explore the display on foot, bring some comfortable footwear and gain a different perspective while walking along the paved pathways throughout the park.
No matter how you choose to view it, the Holiday of Lights will be an unforgettable experience for everyone. Depending on traffic, the display takes about 20 minutes to drive through at a reasonable pace, which ensures that passengers and drivers have plenty of time to pause and look around without feeling rushed.
The seasonal event runs this year from December 2 through January 2, so mark your calendars — you don’t want to miss it! Donations are accepted at the time of entry.
Local’s tip: To really get in the mood, stop by The Grind and grab a hot peppermint mocha or other winter seasonal beverage before you head over to the park. You’ll thank us later.
