For motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, the Back of the Dragon is a quest to be conquered. Winding around the mountainous terrain of southwest Virginia, the Back of the Dragon is made up of 438 curves along 32 miles of Route 16. Founded by Larry Davidson, a native of central Appalachia, the Back of the Dragon was created in an effort to draw more visitors to Tazewell County.
Davidson’s idea was a success — and over the years, the Back of the Dragon has helped stimulate our local economies and shine a light on the gem of a region we call home. Today, the Dragon’s twists and turns draws riders from across the globe. For motorcyclists and riders alike, this expedition is a must.
As you coast around the curves, take in the fresh air and the stellar views, and after your ride, wind down at the Back of the Dragon Center. There, you can pick up a souvenir (or two), pour yourself a beer straight from the tap, and indulge in a culinary concoction from the food truck on site. If you’re lucky, you may even catch some live music!
The Dragon’s waiting — if you’re up for the challenge.
Here’s how this works: Determine which sites you’d like to visit, fuel up and get ready for an adventure you’ll remember for years to come!
