In today’s day and age, it can be difficult to find travel options that appeal to the whole family. But that’s not the case here in Tazewell County, Virginia. In our little corner of Appalachia, much of our culture revolves around family and the time we spend together, which is why our region created tourism opportunities with all ages in mind.
We often spend a lot of time together, but between jobs, school and extracurriculars, sometimes we get caught up in our own schedules. Road trips are a great way to get away for a day — or two — and catch up on some quality time with your loved ones. So, if you’re up for the challenge, we’ve mapped out the perfect route for you.
Here, you’ll find a mixture of historic sites, outdoor recreation and attractions. We encourage you to start early so you can take some time at each destination and learn about our lovely little corner of central Appalachia. Driving across our county, you’ll spot several of our state’s famous “LOVE” signs along both our main streets and our rural roads. When you see one, be sure to stop (safely) and snap a group selfie for the scrapbook — you’ll be thankful you did!
Here’s how this works: Determine which sites you’d like to visit, fuel up and get ready for an adventure you’ll remember for years to come!
Original Pocahontas ATV Trail —
If you’re into the ATVs, this is the place for you. On the Original Pocahontas ATV Trail, you can get your fill of adrenaline as you coast through our scenic hills. With 94 miles of trails to explore, you can check out the exclusive, rural views and still be close enough to stop and enjoy some of our county’s finest attractions (many of which you can find below!).
Pocahontas Exhibition Mine —
Ever wondered what coal mining looked like a century ago? Here’s your chance to catch a glimpse. The Pocahontas Exhibition Mine takes visitors back in time as they safely venture underground. The attraction hosts group tours through the old coal mine from April through September.
Pocahontas Cemetery —
We can learn a lot from our history. At the historic Pocahontas Cemetery, you’ll see a variety of languages etched among the graves. The cemetery is the final resting place of 114 coal miners – Virginians and immigrants — who died in a tragic mine explosion in 1884. Since then, the cemetery has become a space where many come to pay their respects, gather together and observe the surrounding picturesque views.
Cavitt’s Creek/Lake Witten —
Love the Great Outdoors? Factor in some extra time in your schedule to visit Cavitt’s Creek Park! If you enjoy hiking, fishing and relaxing by the lake, make a pitstop at Lake Witten. Here, you can kick back and enjoy an afternoon of peace and quiet. Just don’t forget your fishing license!
Burke’s Garden —
In the eastern part of Tazewell County, Burke’s Garden is a must-see. As one of our region’s most scenic spaces, the bowl-shaped landmark was created from a collapsed limestone dome. Here, we recommend that you cruise around the entire loop, pick up some snacks at one of our local general stores, and enjoy the views.
Crab Orchard Museum —
Appalachian history is far more diverse than many folks expect, and the Crab Orchard Museum is a testament to that fact. At this archeological site, there’s much to learn about the Native Americans who first inhabited this land. Through tours and artifacts, the museum’s preservation helps us keep this important bit of history alive.
